After steadily climbing through the first-half of the year, the S&P 500 index set an all-time high on July 19. It has been downhill since then as losses suffered by financial institutions in the mortgage markets have affected availability of credit. Through August 3, stocks in the housing and banking groups declined 16% and 11%, respectively.

Volatility has spiked. In just three days from August 6 to August 8, the Dow Jones Industrial Average soared nearly 500 points, only to give back 387 points on August 9.
